My Story

I was born in Tanzania near Mount Kilimanjaro, where my early years were spent in a small village without electricity or running water. Those formative experiences taught me the value of resourcefulness and determination—qualities that continue to shape my approach to leadership today.

When I was 11, my father purchased a used computer... specifically:
- a 12MHz PC and
- with a floppy drive
- 256K RAM
- 40MB hard drive
- running MS-DOS

This sparked my fascination with computers and coding at a very young age. I was inspired by the stories of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and their visionary quests to change the world with technology. I taught myself to code (Basic, QBasic, Pascal, C, html) and began programming games and tools to help me understand mathematical concepts. My family was convinced that I would get into software/computer engineering.

I began developing inspiration and a vision of how technology could transform lives. This early passion instilled in me a dream of coming to America to pursue a career in science and technology, and perhaps one day inspire others from my community to follow a similar path.

Early Professional Journey

My career path has been non-linear but purposeful. Early on, despite having strong qualifications and above-average skills, I struggled to land roles in my desired field of financial analysis (my aspiration was to get into Equities Research & Financial Engineering). After numerous rejections that gradually eroded my confidence, I had a pivotal realization:

"How I presented myself, in terms of my attire and my communication style wasn't doing justice to what I could bring to the table."

While I had obsessed over sharpening my technical skill superpowers, I had not put the same effort in sharpening my communication skills. As such, I struggled to effectively convey my superior skills.

Additionally, seing my competiton in interview waiting rooms made me realize I was not well coached on professional attire.

Professional Journey

These realizations led me to invest in a professional stylist, and a public speaking coach, which immediately boosted my confidence and transformed how I was received in interviews.
Fascinated by what I learned from my coaches but admittedly "abysmally clueless about fashion," I approached the problem like the analytical thinker I am... I wrote code that:

- Analyzed millions of products from internet fashion retailers' catalog feeds
- Developed algorithms that learned structural representations of fashion from product descriptions
- Created a unified classification system across different vendors
- Extracted and learned fashion "rules" from blogs and magazines
- Built an outfit curator based on occasion by combining articles from multiple sources

This project marked the beginning of my journey at the intersection of data science and behavioral psychology—a unique combination that has defined my career trajectory.

What Drives Me

I have a healthy obsession with leveraging data and technology to improve people's lives in both significant and subtle ways.

I'm passionate about the possibilities of how data science can amplify human creativity—allowing machines to handle what they excel at while enabling humans to focus on their unique strengths: strategy, critical thinking, and creativity.

My intellectual curiosity extends to understanding what drives human behavior, using these insights to anticipate needs and deliver proactive solutions. It's this fusion of behavioral science and computational expertise that guides my approach to analytics leadership.

What Drives Me

Inspiring others: I remain committed to using my position and expertise to inspire others—particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds—to pursue careers in data science and analytics.

Leadership Philosophy

As a leader, I believe in building high-performing teams that elevate analytics from a support function to a strategic business driver. My approach centers on three principles:

Strategic Alignment: Ensuring analytics initiatives directly connect to enterprise objectives and deliver measurable business outcomes.

Value Creation: Fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity that proactively identifies revenue and efficiency opportunities—typically targeting 0.5-2% of annual sales.

Pragmatic Innovation: Implementing practical analytical solutions that balance methodological rigor with business actionability.

Leadership Philosophy

Throughout my career, these principles have guided teams to deliver over $1 billion in business impact across diverse industries and organizational structures.

Beyond Work

When I'm not immersed in data, I'm a husband to my wife Jihan and father to two energetic boys.

Family: The loss of extended family members has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the short time we have on this earth and the value of maximising quality time with family. I love traveling with my family and seeking new adventureswith my boys.

Activities & Sports: Despite my large frame, I enjoy running (it is like a meditative escape for me). I've run 1 full marathon and several half marathons and many 5Ks. I particularly enjoy doing themed 5Ks with my family.

Music/Concerts: I have an eclectic taste in music spanning 80s and 90s rock, lofi, melodic trance, jazz, afro-house, and reggae. I enjoy attending concerts; recent favorites include Ziggy Marley, One Republic, and Kygo.

Beyond Work

The journey from a small Tanzanian village to leadership roles in data science continues to fuel my passion for creating opportunities and driving innovation through data.
